PLASTER, GYPSUM (SPACKLING COMPOUND)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this

Commercial Item Description for all Federal agencies.

1. SCOPE

1.1 Scope. This commercial item description (cid) covers spackling compound (gypsum or acrylic plaster) intended for filling small cracks, holes, dents, scars, or imperfections in drywall, or knotholes and nail holes in wood.

2. CLASSIFICATION

2.1 Classification. The spackling compound shall be of the following types and sizes.

Type I- Powder

Size 1- 4 to 5 pound bag or box

Size 2- 25 pound bag or box

Type II- Paste

Class 1- Normal weight (11-16 lbs./gal.)

Class 2- Light weight (3-6 lbs./gal.)

Size 3- 1 quart can

Size 4- 1 gallon can

3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 Materials. The spackling compound (gypsum plaster) shall not contain asbestos.

3.1.1 Type I. The type I compound shall be a fine white powder of a uniform mixture of suitable filler, binders, and modifying agents that mix readily with water to form a smooth paste that dries hard in not more than 5 hours under standard operating conditions (75-F, 50% RH) and good ventilation. The size 1 shall consist of a minimum of 4 pounds of spackling compound and the size 2 shall consist of a minimum of 25 pounds of spackling compound.
