COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ASPHALT, ROOFING (HOT-CEMENT, MOPPING COAT)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in lieu of Federal Specification SS-A-666.
This commercial item description covers four types of asphalt used primarily in the construction of built-up roof coverings laid over boards or concrete on various inclines.
Salient characteristics: The asphalt types conform to ASTM D 312.
Type I- Suitable for roofs with inclines not exceeding 1 in/ft.
Type II- Suitable for roofs with inclines between 1/2 in and 3 in/ft.
Type III- Suitable for roofs with inclines between 1/2 in and 6 in/ft.
Type IV- Suitable for roofs with relatively steep stopes and relatively high temperatures.
The issue of ASTM D 312 in effect on the date of solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with stated requirements.
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Packing and Marking. The roofing asphalt shall be packed in accordance with normal commercial practice. The complete pack shall be designed to protect the item against shipment, handling, and storage, to assure delivery at destination, to provide for redistribution by the initial receiving activity and to be acceptable by common carrier under National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Marking shall be as specified in contract or order.
Unitization. The asphalt shall be unitized on a pallet or slip sheet to facilitate handling by forklift truck in accordance with commercial practice. The unitized load shall not exceed 2,500 lb in weight, 63 inches in height, 56 inches in length, and 45 inches in width.
